Why this year’s NAIDOC celebrations will live in our hearts forever

NAIDOC Week has always held an important spot on the BrewHub calendar but this year’s left us with memories we’ll never forget.

BrewHub’s NSW team was lucky enough to attend KARIGAMES, an event hosted by our respected partners KARI, held at The Prince Henry Building in La Perouse on Gadigal Country. Designed to be culturally appropriate, relevant and practical, the one-day event included four rotational activations. Points were earned as participants immersed themselves in First Nations culture through art, cooking, trivia and games. Our team was pumped and arrived ready to listen, learn and experience.

Our top five unforgettable moments of this year’s KARIGAMES included:

  • Putting our spear and boomerang throwing to the test with traditional hunting techniques.
  • Diving into the world of indigenous cooking and treating our bellies to a variety of tasty traditional foods.
  • Being tasked with wrapping up a piece of Barramundi in Australia’s iconic paperbark before it was cooked in the traditional cooking method (turns out this isn’t quite as easy as it sounds, but we did our best to represent!).

  • A knowledge building trivia session that was so beneficial to us all. It’s one thing to celebrate NAIDOC week, and another to really understand the heart of it.
  • A creative storytelling art session where we expressed ourselves through vibrant visuals inspired by First Nations stories. Throughout this session, we were able to tell our BrewHub story: our strong history, our love for our people and great experiences, and the importance of sharing.

What a day. What an experience. A HUGE thanks to the KARI team for generously sharing your culture and history on this extraordinary day. Our NSW team truly embraced this opportunity to learn and celebrate, gained valuable knowledge and developed a deeper appreciation for Australia’s First Nations culture.

As part of Brewhub’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) team, we’re committed to promoting understanding and respect for First Nations Peoples. We were so grateful for this important and meaningful time and opportunity to grow our knowledge.

We vow, more than ever, to keep the fire burning.
